We’re off!

Well, at least as far as Melbourne!

Early morning train.

Quite relaxing especially given the hectic last few days which included a weekend of photographic workshops at Bright (which was pleasingly busy with people given the Dezi Freeman circumstances…).

It is mountain bike heaven in Bright too; we even managed to sell my MTB!

Always pleasant scenery looking out from the train window.

AND my aim is to finish reading Alex Kerr’s ‘Lost Japan’ which has been quite engrossing, particularly his architecture-oriented perspective of the Kansai region: Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara - all places on our itinerary. He taps into the history as well without overwhelming you in detail.

At the end of the book, Kerr (still bemoaning the loss of traditional culture) nevertheless ends on an optimistic note:

At the very moment of its disappearance, [it] is having its greatest flowering.

Now to tackle Ishiguro’s ‘An Artist of the Floating World’ which has been ‘parked’ whilst I read Alex Kerr.

A day with the kids today.
